Standard nine-category rankings assume every category matters equally to your team.
Once you punt one, that stops being true.
If you are punting free-throw percentage, Rudy Gobert should not keep losing value because he shoots 52% from the line. Tyler Herro should not keep gaining value because he shoots 93%. Your team is no longer trying to win that category.
Remove free throws from the calculation and the board changes quickly.
Gobert moves up 62 spots. Giannis Antetokounmpo gains 42 and becomes the top-ranked player in the model. Several guards whose value is helped by strong free-throw shooting move sharply in the other direction.
That is the point of punt-adjusted rankings. They show what a player is worth to the team you are actually building, rather than to a theoretical balanced roster.
What changes when free throws are removed

The biggest risers are mostly centers whose standard rankings are held down by their free throws.
Gobert, Claxton and Nurkić already provide rebounds, blocks and strong field-goal percentage. Once free throws no longer count, their main weakness disappears.
Giannis gains 42 spots and ranks first in the eight-category model. His points, rebounds, assists and field-goal percentage were already elite. Removing his largest negative category leaves one of the strongest profiles available.
The fallers are mostly guards and wings who get real value from the line.
Herro and Bane both shot above 92%. Booker and DeRozan combined strong percentages with enough volume to have a meaningful effect on the category.
They are not bad players in a punt-free-throw build. They are simply less valuable to that build than they are in standard rankings.
The practical question is price. Taking Herro or Booker at a rank that assumes their free throws matter means paying for production your roster has already decided not to use.
Why punt free throws fits together so well
Free-throw percentage is one of the cleanest punts because the players who hurt you at the line often help in several other categories.
In this season’s player pool, free-throw impact had the following correlations:

Poor free-throw shooters tend to be bigs. They are also more likely to provide rebounds, blocks and strong field-goal percentage.
Strong free-throw shooters are more often guards and wings, and are more likely to provide threes. The same players who gain value when free throws are removed also strengthen three other categories.
In this model, punt free throws created eight new top-30 players. Most other single-category punts created four or five. That gives you a deeper target pool and more chances to draft players whose standard rank understates their value to your team.
Gobert moving up 62 spots does not mean you should automatically draft him 62 picks earlier. The edge comes from getting Gobert’s punt-adjusted production at something close to his normal draft price.
The main punt builds
Punt free-throw percentage
This is the main big-man build.
The best targets are frontcourt players whose standard rankings are reduced by their free throws:

- Evan Mobley: +26

The build naturally becomes strong in field-goal percentage, rebounds and blocks.
It can also open up guards such as Josh Giddey or Russell Westbrook. Their free throws are less of a problem, while their assists help cover one of the build’s main weaknesses.
The mistake is drafting every big who rises.
A roster built around Giannis, Gobert and another center may already have enough rebounds and blocks. Adding a fourth or fifth similar player can create more strength where you do not need it while leaving assists, threes and steals untouched.
The useful complements are guards and wings who provide:
- assists without relying heavily on free throws for value;
- three-pointers;
- steals;
- enough points to stop the build becoming too defensive.
The edge is not simply that Gobert becomes better. It is that Gobert, Claxton, Sengun and similar players can be worth more to your roster than they are to the rest of the room.
Punt field-goal percentage
This is the guard-heavy build.
High-volume scorers gain because their missed shots no longer matter. Their points, threes, assists, steals and free throws remain.

The build is usually strong in points, threes, assists, free-throw percentage and steals.
Its problem is frontcourt production.
If the early rounds are dominated by guards, you can quickly fall behind in rebounds and blocks. Blocks are especially difficult to repair once the main centers are gone.
The best complements are bigs who can block shots without needing field-goal percentage to carry their value. You do not need them to be perfect fits. You need enough frontcourt production to avoid accidentally punting two categories.
That is the key difference from punt free throws. Punt free throws gives you blocks as part of the normal target pool. Punt field-goal percentage usually requires you to go and buy them separately.
Punt turnovers
Punt turnovers is the most flexible build.
High-usage players turn the ball over because they handle the ball and create offence. Removing turnovers raises the value of a broad group of primary and secondary creators:

Unlike the other punts, it does not push the roster towards one position or player type.
You can still be strong in percentages, threes, points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocks. The rest of the build depends on the players you draft.
That makes punt turnovers useful when you want to stay flexible early, or when several of your best players already carry high turnover totals.
The limitation is price.
The market already expects Luka, Harden and Cade to turn the ball over. Their standard draft positions are still high because managers are willing to accept the category loss.
They improve in the model, but they are not always heavily discounted.
Punt turnovers is often the easiest punt to add later. It is less likely than punt free throws to create an obvious pool of underpriced specialists.
Punt assists
Punt assists is another frontcourt-heavy build and often pairs with punt free throws.
Centers and low-usage wings gain because their lack of playmaking no longer counts against them.

The build is usually strong in field-goal percentage, rebounds and blocks.
It can also hold up in steals and threes if you add defensive wings and catch-and-shoot players rather than more non-passing centers.
Punt assists and punt free throws fit together because many of the same players benefit from both. Gobert, Allen, Williams, Ware and other finishing bigs are not being drafted for passing or free-throw shooting anyway.
The risk is points.
A roster that punts assists and free throws can easily become too dependent on defensive bigs and low-usage wings. If it also falls behind in scoring, it is effectively giving up three categories.
The double punt works best when the early frontcourt players are elite enough to create a real advantage, not when the roster is simply full of decent centers.
Blocks still matter
The top five shot-blockers in this dataset averaged 2.1 blocks per game. The player-pool median was 0.5.
That does not mean blocks should never be punted. It means the useful supply is concentrated and drops quickly.
This matters most in guard-heavy builds. If you wait too long to address blocks, there may not be a realistic way to recover them without weakening several other categories.
The same principle applies to steals, although steals are spread across more positions.
When to choose a punt
Most of the time, the first few picks should guide the build.
- Giannis gives you a strong reason to consider punting free throws.
- A start built around several high-volume guards may point towards punt field-goal percentage.
- Multiple primary creators can make turnovers the cheapest category to give up.
- An early group of strong finishers and shot-blockers may make assists too expensive to repair.
You do not need to force a punt before the draft starts.
A player moving up in an adjusted model tells you that he fits a build. It does not tell you that the build is right for your current roster.
The best punt is usually the category your team is already weak in, would be expensive to fix and does not need in order to win five others.

- which players gain value in your build;
- which players lose value once a category is removed;
- which categories your current targets are not providing;
- and where a player’s adjusted value differs from his likely draft price.
The aim is not to tell you to draft every player who moves up.
It is to show what each player is worth to the team you are actually building.
