Valuing Injured Players: Expected Games and Return Timelines

A player is worth only the production you actually collect, and production you never collect because he is on the bench is worth nothing at all. That sounds obvious, yet availability is the single most mispriced input in fantasy basketball, because rankings and instinct both lead with per-game output and treat games played as an afterthought. Injuries turn valuation into an expected-value problem: a player is worth his production times the share of games he plays, and for an injured player, that share depends almost entirely on when he comes back. What follows is how to value players through that lens, and how a return-timeline estimate turns the guess into a number.

Availability as a value multiplier

Season value is per-game value times the fraction of games a player is on the floor. Put two players side by side in the same role. One grades out at a +6.0 per-game z-score but plays 55 of 82 games; the other grades out at +4.0 and plays every night.

Player A is fifty percent better per game and banks exactly the same season value, because availability closed the entire gap. It is why a durable role player can out-earn a more talented star over a full year, and why the games-played column deserves as much attention as the box score. Injury is not a footnote on a player's value. It is a multiplier on all of it.

Return timelines by injury type

Not all injuries are the same problem, and the label a team hands out, day-to-day or week-to-week, is close to useless for planning. What you need is an expected timeline and a recurrence risk, and both depend on the injury.

The difference between a two-week soft-tissue strain and a six-week foot injury is the difference between a hold and a drop, and no amount of watching the injury report tells you which one you are looking at. The estimate of expected games missed is the number that decides it. One rule sits above the table: a chronic, recurring problem is a worse risk than a one-off, even at the same game count, because it will cost you again.

Drafting injury-prone players

The market rarely prices availability well. It over-discounts a star coming off a scary-sounding injury and under-discounts the chronically fragile, whose name still commands a high pick. A player who has missed 25 or more games for several seasons running, like Zion Williamson or Kawhi Leonard, should be valued on the 55 to 60 games you can reasonably expect, not the per-game line he posts when healthy. On the other side, a durable player who suits up 78-plus nights banks value every game the fragile star is resting, which adds up to a real edge over a season.

In-season: stash, drop, or trade

Once the season starts, an injured player forces one of three decisions, and all three come down to the same comparison: what he will give you after he returns, against what the roster spot gives you in the meantime.

A stash is worth it, roughly, when his expected per-game value after returning, times the number of games you will actually start him this season, times the probability he returns to form, exceeds what a freely available player would provide in that spot over the same weeks. Two terms in that expression dominate, and both come from the return timeline. A six-week absence instead of a two-week one cuts the games-you-will-start-him term and raises the chance the roster spot bled value you cannot get back. The longer and less certain the return, the weaker the stash, which is why a precise expected-games number matters more than the injury's name.

The same logic drives buy-low and sell-high. A star with a nagging, recurring problem is a sell-high candidate, because the market is still paying his healthy price for a discounted number of games. A star a week from returning is a buy-low, because the manager holding him has been staring at a zero and tends to undervalue the weeks ahead. In both cases the timeline is the important variable.

How an injury raises teammates' value

Valuing an injured player down is only half the story, because his minutes and possessions do not vanish; they pass to his teammates. When a high-usage star sits, the players beside him gain value, sometimes enough to swing a matchup, and the manager who spots the beneficiary first gets him off waivers for nothing. How should I value an injured player on draft day?

By his expected games, not his healthy per-game line. If a player has a multi-year pattern of missing 25 or more games, price him on roughly 55 to 60 games. The discount protects you from spending a premium pick on two-thirds of a season.

When is it worth stashing an injured player?

When his expected production after he returns, over the games you will actually start him, beats what a waiver-wire player would give you in that roster spot in the meantime. The longer the return timeline, the weaker the stash, because you hold a zero for longer and start him fewer times.

What do return timelines look like by injury type?
